Resurrecting Richard Chai

I've known Richard Chai for about 10 years, when he was still Richie, a sweet, young designer at Marc Jacobs. He started out at the company in 1998, when it was just him and one assistant. "One day Marc announced: I'm moving to Paris! which left me to hold down the fort in New York, practically on my own! We would fax sketches and comments back and forth, overnight." After working as the Design Director at Tse for two years, Richard finally broke out on his own in 2004 and has steadily found a comfortable, cool niche in the women's and men's wear world, leading up to a nomination for the 2010 CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear!
Richard hadn't been to the Resurrection archives since those Marc Jacobs days, when he used to have an ID badge to shop for research purposes. For his own collections he doesn't find much inspiration in vintage, but seeing the old collector's pieces at the store and in the basement brought back fond memories. He recognized Margiela pieces his friend and shoe designer Irene Chung would wear to the office. He discovered his favorite Comme des Garcons dress and a selection from Marc Jacobs' grunge collection. He got a kick out of the miniscule, khaki YSL safari top and skirt suit I modeled for him. Even the girls from the store and customers got involved and showed off their favorite dresses.
