featured seller friday : valise vintage...

I used to do featured seller Friday all the time, I don't know why I stopped! I think I might start getting back into it, I love sharing my favorite beautiful shops....

On that note, this week I am featuring Valise Vintage, a lovely shop I discovered recently on etsy. Valise's owner, Rose, was super awesome & sent me some fabulous photos & gave me a great little interview...

Tell me about the name of your shop, Valise...

Valise is a French word that means small traveling case. I wanted a name that felt international, and also spoke of another era. Valise makes me think about steamy train platform scenes with women getting hello kisses in perfect dresses. Departing to destinations unknown. Spontaneity. Adventure. What would she pack in her Valise? What secrets might it hold?

Clockwise from top left: Photo by Ed Van Der Elsken, Ricard most refreshing, Jean Seberg inBreathless, Black bow flats from foxandfawns, Serge & Jane, Black velvet dress from Valise, Jean Shrimpton (not actually French but her look is everything I love), Plaid dress from Custard Heart Vintage, Françoise Hardy

How & when did you get into vintage, both personally & selling?

I inherited my love of the hunt from my Mom. Almost every weekend when we were kids, she would pack me and my little brother into the car at the crack of dawn for a day of garage sales. I’ve been thrifting every since, but I got serious about vintage fashion in high school.

Over the years, my personal vintage style has definitely morphed—from a brief (yikes) gothic phase to mod to my current mix of a bit of everything—but I’ve always loved a pretty dress. And always had a hard time leaving a pretty dress behind. My collection of pieces that don’t quite fit has haunted the back of my closet for a while, but I started selling vintage just this year. I was inspired to do so by the lovely ladies of Mighty Swell  (
http://www.mightyswell.com
), a vintage boutique here in Minneapolis. I’ve been a vendor at their last two sales. It was so fun to watch the things I’d collected find other happy homes, that I decided to join the inspiring Etsy vintage community. So many beautiful things changing hands all the time.

Tell me about your favorite vintage finds... (see photos below)

My favorite vintage find is the one that fits me! A few recent pieces that stopped me in my tracks because of their color/pattern:

1.     70s floral print bag—currently the mascot of Valise.
 2.     60s painted velvet cocktail dress—the print is so bizarre and otherworldly.

3.     50s heels—I love the color and glamor of these shoes. Alas, not in my size, so off to the shop they go.

Your shop is really lovely, I love the merchandise photography. What inspires the visual aspect of your shop?

It is important to me that the shop feels like a curated collection. Since the clothes span the decades, I like to unite them visually by offering seasonal color palettes: First Blush for Spring and Thunderstorms & Blooms for Summer (see summer sneak peeks). Because I am a graphic designer by day, I want my shop to have a visual tonality and rhythm. It is like creating a living collage. I am also inspired by my lovely model Kim Bowman. She makes the clothes come to life.

If you could go back in time & live in a different decade, which would you choose?

For fashion and general lifestyle, I would love to have lived in Paris in the 60s. Cafés! Bangs! Minidresses! Jacques Dutronc! Scarves! Two of my personal style icons are Françoise Hardy and Jean Seberg. I wish life was always as beautiful as an Agnès Varda film and as cool as a Godard one. I’ve always had a bit of a love affair with easy breezy Parisian style—and the food!—and the music!—and did I mention the style?!

Anywhere else we can find you? Blog?

Yes! I have a blog (http://valisevintage.tumblr.com ) I’m just getting rolling. I plan to offer specials and shop updates.

She has some really great vintage pieces in her shop & I love love the shop photos. Also she is offering my readers 15% off all items in her shop until Valentines Day! Just enter prettylittlevintage at check out. Enjoy our little chat below...

Your shop photos are amazing, I love background! Where do you draw inspiration from when taking photos for your shop?

Thank you! Most of my inspiration comes from browsing through vintage fashion magazines that I’ve collected, a few vintage fashion blogs that I read, and I always get great tips & ideas from my photographer uncle {jalexanderphotography}.

When did you decide to start selling vintage?

I decided at 12 years old that one day I would open a vintage clothing and antique shop, and I’ve been collecting ever since. {I opened my first retail store 7 years later!}

What has been your favorite vintage find?

Some of my most exciting vintage finds have been a pair of vintage Ray-Ban cat eye sunglasses {I got them for free at the end of an estate sale}, two vintage Gucci purses {I found them both at flea markets in Florida years ago}, a flawless sterling silver and leather handbag from the 1800’s {probably one of the oldest things I own}, more recently I found an antique lion door knocker that I absolutely fell in love with {all I need now is a house!}, and two vintage bathing suits {for $2.50 each and they fit me!}.

You also have a really pretty blog, tell me about it...

I started my blog a few years ago and then never really did anything with it, but in the last year I’ve been dabbling in photography and needed a place to share it. So I began posting regularly and in the last few months it has morphed into more of a vintage fashion blog. Once you get into it, blogging is SO addicting!

When I moved to my own flat and started to read some blogs about interior decorating I began a huge fan of mid century modern furniture and scandinavian design - this is my main source of inspiration.

When did you start designing?
Immediately after high school - I started work at a local agency.

Those are items I get for myself but actually have no space for them at home so I'm selling them, Im more of a collector that vintage trader, selling those precious item is always bit sad for me but it is nice when they could make someone else happy.

featured seller friday : the vintage design shop

Happy Friday!

This weeks featured seller is Rena from TheVintageDesignShop on etsy. Her shop is filled with amazing vintage patterns, women's attire & accessories, plus some home goodies.

See our chat & some of my favorite items from her shop below...

When did you decide you wanted to start selling vintage?

I had the idea for quite a few months before I actually opened my Etsy shop online in August 2010, during which time I did research and developed my plan. I've always loved old things and stories about the past. My day job is in archaeology and I have gone to school for many years. I actually left my PhD at Cambridge because I wanted to find another way to engage with the past rather than strictly through academic settings. As it turns out, I believe that vintage is another way to keep more recent objects alive through a greater audience, as well a chance to both reuse existing objects and make a distinctive fashion statement.

I love creating, and selling vintage online allows me to dip my toe into other interests, like photography and fashion. Plus it's a real thrill hearing back from my customers when they're just as excited by a vintage item they've ordered from my shop as I was to find it!

What has been your favorite vintage find?
I'm not sure how to pick just one! I suppose the only trend there is that I usually find vintage items in the most unlikely places and times, so the trick is to always keep looking.

One of my favourite items is the Japanese leather piggy bank currently listed on my site.
Another favorite find I admit I couldn't part with is a gorgeous 50s black wool dress.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I find inspiration is all around me. Sunny days really energize me for photography and getting stuff done in general. My aesthetic runs to bright, minimalist and fresh. I loved working at the Design Museum in London and the exciting design objects and energy from the city's varied design scene, from emergent to established designers. I also feel that you can express yourself through select clothing, whether a vintage find or a new creation through a vintage pattern. Also, I love fashion illustration and I'm totally hooked.

feature seller friday... thesolarium

This weeks featured seller is Erin from The Solarium on etsy. Her shop is new, which is very exciting, I love new etsy shops...so many possibilities :) She features vintage style jewelry & incorporates unique vintage findings into her pieces.

Read our interview below & check out some of my picks from her new shop thesolarium.

I really enjoy your shop name, it is very unique. How did you come up with it?

I wanted an unusual name that evoked an old-fashioned, secluded & quiet feeling & The Solarium seemed to fit.

You use a lot of vintage materials in your designs, where do you find them?

Usually I do my shopping on Etsy, but there are some good antique stores in my area that have interesting findings, keys & padlocks especially which hopefully I'll be able to use more of in my jewelry soon.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Old illustrations and stories, the minimalist style, ancient cultures, sometimes instrumental music which I'm very fond of. Sometimes I just dump all my materials on the table and mix whatever looks good!

Can we find you anywhere else? (blog, facebook, twitter, etc.)

I have a Twitter here: twitter.com/sgbeads, and a Tumblr for posting new info on all my shops and other random things I like: maisoneclaire.tumblr.com

I want to thank Erin for being a featured seller! Be sure to check out her beautiful shop here. I can't wait to see what she has in store for the future!

& stay tuned for another amazing etsy shop next Friday!
