"We must be the best kept secret in the Hamptons," bemoans Ruth as she offers me a ride to the Bridgehampton train station. "No one wants to talk or write about us because all the big companies want to keep us to themselves!" As flattering as this may sound, their hush hush reputation has proven to be quite tragic lately. Due to the economic downturn Ruth and Lucille have suffered major losses since last year. They had to sell their photo studio and showroom and fear that the store, Out of the Closet on Main Street, might not even make it until the end of the year. And did I see a For Sale sign in the window of her convertible?
What a bitter disaster it would be, if this jewel of a vintage store would disappear. Not only are both ladies the sweetest, most adorable women in town, they are also extremely knowledgeable, especially in the Victorian vintage department. They own a huge collection of white and black Victorian garments, all impeccable and affordable. There is a seamstress on site who can do alternations while you wait. It's right in the center of Bridgehampton and they are upgrading their website to do remote sales as well.
I happened to stumble upon the store when I got off the jitney on Sunday and as I listened to their story I became inspired to help out. I bought a beautiful, 1920's yellow chiffon dress which the ladies sold me at a nice discount. And as you read my post, I hope to transcend some of my sympathy for this amazing store.
