Society Film Club - The Lost Weekend & Other Classics

This one will be our little secret as I really don't want too many of you to cotton on to it. I was thrilled to hear about The Society Film Club through my old friend William Borrell of Vestal Vodka - and knowing how much I love classic movies he was quite right to recommend it.

Organised by Robert and Babette Pereno 'The Society' combines a fascinating bunch of people with their love of cinema, who meet every Monday at the sexy Sanctum Hotel Soho. Robert usually breaks into song before the film accompanied by the delicious Daisy Tallulah.

Film choices range from Punk/Porn (my personal favourite) and classics such as 'A Lost Weekend' (1945) directed by Billy Wilder and starring the rather sultry Ray Milland. Do we care if he's an alcoholic? Do we hell!

My obsession with classic cinema is widely known, having developed a fixation for Hitchcock and Frank Capra from an early age. Everything seems so much more glamorous when you look back on it! Modern times suck hey? Last week the film club played 'Withnail & I' and frankly anyone who doesn't laugh through it should be lined up and shot, with lines like 'throw yourself into the road darling, you haven't got a chance!' and 'I must have some booze, I demand to have some BOOZE!!!' - (there's an alcoholic theme starting to appear here isn't there?)

Not usually known for their social graces - too busy getting refreshments and popping upstairs for a cheeky cigarette - this time most of the cinemagoers were literally glued to the screen and the only peep we heard was sheer hysterical laughter, especially when Uncle Monty, (played by Richard Griffiths) made his appearance and everyone exploded into a furore, laughing so much they all had tears in their eyes and a stitch in their side!

The afterparty at the roof bar is currently the best way to shed the back-to-work-Monday-blues, with DJ Carrera playing an outstanding & eclectic mix of hip-swinging numbers. There, with a very large Vestal Vodka in hand, one can mingle & dance the night away.

Follow 'Robert's World' at The Society Club online for an informed but fun cultural guide to the all the arts, events, and Mrs P's shopping tips!

Next Monday is my 26th birthday and I get to celebrate with the Pereno family for 'Strip! Strip! Hooray!' - an ensemble of 50's & 60's short striptease films. The legendary Burlesque performer Trixie Malicious will also be performing a special dance in honour of Soho and striptease. Should be an interesting evening!
