Vintage shopping with Phillip Lim

Although his Fall collection found strong inspiration in the past, with flared suede and high waisted silk pants that evoked a Halston Studio 54 feeling, Phillip Lim does not go vintage shopping often. In fact, he hadn't done any "normal" stuff in a while. So when I asked him to join me at the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show, he didn't think twice. "This is going to be fun!" he predicted.
We were not prepared however, for the seductive nature of this place.... Not only is the show gigantic, it is also extremely well edited and organized. There is no junk or trash or redundancy. Every single one of the almost ninety dealers at the Manhattan Pavillion brings its very best selection of vintage clothing and accessories. Prices range anywhere from $35 to $3500 and everything is in mint condition. You simply cannot get bored!
Phillip and I spent three hours scanning the racks, inspecting details, trying stuff on and taking silly pictures. Even though I had promised myself not to buy anything, I couldn't resist walking home with two beautiful dresses - they are after all my weak spot. Phillip bought 4 handbags and a pair of adorable cream ladies shoes. "It was a great day of fashion, finds, friends and french fries!" he concluded. Or should we say Belgian fries?

We found this navy halter dress by Claire McCardell at Lofty Vintage. According to Phillip Claire was the queen of American sports wear.

This bag is made from a real armadillo, head, feet, skin and armor. I had mixed feelings about this one...

And a bag made out of real tiger skin...

These are rare Cazal sunglasses. The frame felt like plastic but with a $550 price tag the rest better be gold!

We saw a lot of eccentric, colorful characters at the show. This is Zandra!

"Watching my super stylish friend Ms. Joos try everything on was insanely inspiring. It seemed as though I was looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses"

The Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show will always have a special place in my heart. In the summer of 2002 I bought my wedding dress there, a 1930's hand painted silk halter dress. The mayor who married us, voted me the best dressed bride of the year.

Monday Feature ConduitPress

I love this shop, so unique and creative work. Worth to check it out and why not buying :)

Here are some words directly from this talented etsy seller :
"My name is talia and for as long as i can remember i've Loved, absolutely adored, making things. It started with crayons and photographs and eventually morphed into books, painting, stamping and who knows what else.
My hope is that this store represents myself in a way that nothing else can (except my children and family). i look forward to my growth as an artist here, and in sharing that art, and my life, with you. Visit my art BLOG at for most recent creations and diatribes.
And my Flickr page for more photos of my art; to sell or not to sell of course;)"

REBECCA'S DESERT THERAPY

When I met up with Rebecca Dayan at Resale Therapy in Palm Springs, she had just discovered the most expensive rack in the store. With a light, dreamy smile, she tiptoed to greet me dressed in a turquoise, lavender and pink drop waist feathered Louis Feraud dress. The sales clerks fluttered around her, gasping with delight. She looked stunning.
Resale Therapy is a real gem. Located in the middle of the desert this consignment store has everything from complete seasons of St John to 1970s Ungaro and YSL. The friendly staff hails mostly from New York and is very vintage savvy. Like chatty personal shoppers they seem to know exactly what you are looking for. Those beautiful Louis Feraud dresses for example. A former employee of the French couturier had consigned them to the store just a few months earlier, straight off the runway. Even though none of us could afford them, we all tried one on.  Then Rebecca appeared from behind her fitting room curtain,  looking like a fairy tale...

Bombshell dress...

Well, it was Cornwall, not Devon, and my lovely Audi broke down had to leave it behind. Plus we had a teenager and a toddler with us.....but because of 'high energy' Amy (I love you Ames) and the kids making us laugh we still had a fantastic time. Miracle. I am off to collect my lovely car tomorrow as well as have a hunt round some antique shops on the way home...just uploaded a few new dresses on the website, take a peek.....here is one for now...more crowns coming soon too. AND look at this fabulous bangle!! By Tortolani, 1957, Zodian signs all carved into the metal....shall I keep it?!! X Samaya
