Dressing Miss Daisy

A little bird told me that Daisy Lowe would be a a great girl to shoot for one of my vintage closet stories. Supposedly she has a reputable collection... But it wasn't until I spotted her at the Chanel party in New York, wearing a vintage cobalt blue velvet floor length cape that I got first hand evidence of her rightful vintage adoration and mustered up the nerve to ask her. Two weeks later, I am at her apartment in Holland Park watching her throw on the most delicious gowns and dresses and I think to myself: the little bird was right.

Daisy's passion for fashion and vintage can be greatly attributed to her mom, Pearl. They shop together, go to vintage fairs, put on shows, they even have their own design collaborations with big UK street brands. Pearl has revamped budget retailer Peacocks, and Daisy will be launching her first capsule collection with Morgan this fall. It will consist of 17 ready-to-wear pieces and 7 accessories, all vintage inspired and Lowe-infused. "I called the collection 'Oiseaux de Nuit', because I feel like a bird of the night sometimes. I got all my friends to pose for the campaign. They have real bodies and they all looked so cute!" Daisy is also the poster child for Biba. In London, her face is everywhere! The fall campaign rides around the city on those red double decker buses, which still puts her off a bit: "I'm like a giant!!!"
When I meet Daisy, she had just come back from Somerset, where she spends a lot of her free time. She greets me, all smiles, wearing rolled down socks and a beautiful 1940's Marks and Spencer powder blue silk dress and proudly introduces me to Monty, her white pooch, who actually seems to be a bit car sick; poor thing is shivering. Nonetheless he lounges quietly on the bed while his boss poses and changes for me. All those years of being in the front of the cameras taught her a thing or two about modeling. Shooting Daisy is a dream! And she brings something new to the Tales: a healthy dose of sex appeal...

"This is easily the prettiest dress I own. I bought it from a girl on the street in Soho, in front of the Mercer hotel."
White cotton dress (Geminola, NY)
"I made this painting with a friend of mine. I always find that painting makes me feel better!" Daisy goes on to explain the meaning of the different elements and colors in the painting but she lost me somewhere at "infinity" and "spiral of life". Sorry! Clearly I was concentrating on the shot!

Cream, cotton, tiered hippie dress.
"I bought this dress in San Francisco. It was the last stop on our road trip. Unfortunately we never got to see the Golden Gate Bridge! All those years of watching Full House... and I don't even get to see the bridge..."
Strapless turqouise flower print prom dress (Geminola, NY) and vanilla velvet coat (Virginia's, London).
"I LOVE velvet!"
"My friends call me OCDaisy. Everything in my closet is color coordinated and I can't stand a mess!"
1920's beach suit and burgundy velvet jacket (Samaya Ling, London).
Navy velvet mini-dress (www.spanishmossvintage.com).
I think Erin Wasson was wearing a dress from them at that same Chanel party....
Silk, blue and white polka dot dress and faux fur navy coat.
"I bought this dress when I was on a job in Dublin. On our way to the location we passed this vintage store and something inside me screamed that I had to go in! I begged the producer and when they finally let me get out of the car, I found this dress. It had my name written all over it and I made it fit! It was just one of those moments when you know you will find something great. The coat is just too funny. I feel like a pimp!!"
Pearl Lowe on an album cover with her mid-1990's band Powder.
"I paid 12.50 for this dress at the Goodwood vintage fair. It's old and looks cheap but I love it."
Black crepe and gauze gown (Samaya Ling).

vintage and more Wayfaring Magnolia on Etsy

Hello, This week I am featuring Wayfaring Magnolia on Etsy . You can find here from buttons to vintage and Jewery. Here is a little something directly from this crafty etsy seller Amanda. Enjoy!

"Hey There!

I'm Amanda and I love LOVE love art, music, fashion and life! I am trying to teach myself to design clothing and any other crafty skill I get inspired by. Don't be surprised if my shop changes often, my interests change often, everyday I find something new that inspires me. I just graduated from Michigan State so I'm a small fish just trying to find my way in the big ole world.

I currently work as a professional musician/gypsy wherever people want to hear me sing. I try to write songs but am pretty timid about people reading my writings.

I'm always open to talking to fellow etsy peeps for possible business or collaboration. So please if you have any questions or anything please contact me. I'm just starting to get serious about all of this and would love any comments or new friends :)"

Happy Monday...

Just a short one to show a couple of images just in from the shoot last week - my selection of vintage clothes, styled by Lou (ruinedlou), modeled by Eleanor and photographed by Simon Powell....more soon!

Interview: Jen Ray

Jen Ray, photographed by Trevor Good for StilinBerlin.

Trevor Good, a young and aspiring photographer living and working in Kreuzberg is the newest addition to our StilinBerlin team. In the future he will portray artists and other interesting figures of today's Berlin for us. You can see his ongoing documentation of Berlin's art-world here: GOOD + UP.
For his first portrait he chose Jen Ray, because, as he says: "Her artwork and her personality have truly inspired me for many reasons and I wanted people to know about her and her drawings."

Ana Finel Honigman interviewed Jen Ray for an upcoming book accompanying her curational project "Saccharine" at Grimm Museum and we are delighted to publish an excerpt here:

Ana Finel Honigman: How would you articulate the tensions between opulence,
decadence and control in your work?
Jen Ray: If you look at the pure definition of decadence, it refers to
deterioration and decay, but when people refer to decadence, they are
usually referencing over-the-top behavior. I deal with that in my work but
I'm also interested in the breaking-down, be it positive or negative. The
women populating my drawings are destructive, yet they create this world for
themselves. They are the wild things, which can create negativity.
Radicalism often means you risk decay. When you push boundaries they
sometimes push back.

AFH: Anarchists rarely plan past their revolution.
JR: Sure, they are more focused on the action. But my drawings always
show the ramifications. There will be a beautiful structure depicted in my
drawings with color and decoration, but somewhere you’ll see the structure
is crumbling. The destruction is part of my work. But I still want my
characters to go forth and do what they need to do. I don’t want to hold
them back. I just want there to be that constant push-pull. I want viewers
to see the same dichotomy in the small details hidden amidst the opulence. I
want a dirty newspaper to be seen against a golden robe.

AFH: Tell me about how your performances relate to the paintings and
drawings.

JR: It was important to me when I began the performances to create
something visual that directly related to the drawings. I wanted the viewer
to get the impression of a drawing come to life. For my first performance,
“Last Call”, I gathered together a unique looking team of women and asked
them to wear costumes that in some cases were militaristic and others more
anachronistic looking, each slightly different. I surrounded them with
color, smoke, candles and glass. The main stage consisted of a full-sized
utility vehicle. Ihu Anywanu, a singer, performed Black Sabbath’s “Sweet
Leaf”. One of my main concepts was that I wanted a woman to sing a love
song to an object instead of to a man. The performer sang it with intensity
but she sang it to herself and to the women around her. No pandering to the
audience! Each woman was directed to look straight ahead as if she could
have cared less about the audience.

Look familiar?

{vintage} hats!

One of my very favoritest things about fall is hats.

I have quite the collection myself, & I cannot wait to start wearing them once the weather is right. I have several summer hats as well, but my fall/winter hats are my favorite. :)

In honor of hats, here are some of my favorite vintage pieces from some wonderful etsy shops!

featured seller friday : theClassicFarmhouse

This weeks featured seller is Katy from the etsy shop theClassicFarmhouse. Katy has some AMAZING houseware vintage items that I am drooling over. She has a great story & background as to how she began her little business.

Take a peek at her story below, along with some of my favorite items from her shop!

p.s. Katy is kind enough to offer readers of prettylittlevintage a discount of 20% off there first order (now through the end of October)! Just enter PLV1010 in a message to seller.

Your shop is filled with such amazing beautiful items (& they photographs are stunning!)…where do you get your inspiration from?

First off, thank you! I personally love creating a warm and inviting space that people feel comfortable in and I think nothing does that better then hints of history & nostalgia. I gain a lot of inspiration from rural living & old america. Times when life was simpler & less cluttered but still full of well loved & cherished things. I love things in particular that can be used in a variety of ways...even if it's not the intended use. With style it's all about having fun & making it you!

Trio of Cream Mugs

How did your fascination with vintage begin, & when did you decide you wanted to sell vintage?

I was raised in a 1910 Dutch Colonial home full of character & spent so much time at garage sales growing up that it just became a part of me. I don't remember a time in my life where I was not surrounded by old stuff! From young I was always collecting, gathering and 'inherting' old things. I still own very little that is not secondhand or recreated in some way.

My true start in selling vintage began over 20 years ago when I held my first (what became annual) garage sale to weed out some of my treasures. It almost became a joke how excited people were to come to my sales, leaving numbers & emails hoping they would be the first to know of my next one. I knew at that point I had a knack for it but didn't have the right venue...that is until I discovered etsy!!! I browsed for a couple months before I took the leap into setting up shop. So glad I did! & just so you know, the garage sale is still an annual event.

What is your favorite thing about selling vintage?

The adventure of discovering new & exciting treasures & the thrill of someone else purchasing that item to give it a new home. There's an excitement that comes from knowing that something I so lovingly rescued is going to be treasured by someone else.

Can we find you anywhere else (twitter, facebook, blogger?)?

{as I mentioned earlier} theClassicFarmhouse would love to offer your readers 20% off their first order at www.theClassicFarmhouse.etsy.com (excluding other sales. & for the discount code please use PLV1010...good through end of October and is for 20% any order (excludes shipping and other sales).

Grey Hair...

I had a good read of my old books last night and was reminded about Dior's views on hair whilst re reading 'The Little Dictionary Of Fashion' (by Dior). He has brilliant (and very funny in this day and age) opinions on all things but I especially love this: "Nothing is prettier than grey hair. And by the time a woman's hair is grey she has usually acquired a charming kind of dignity and femininity. So she will choose elegant clothes with soft lines - nothing too sophisticated or too masculine". Well I popped in on my mum this morning after the school run and told her, she was horrified and said "Thats all very well but it depends what sort of grey you go, I have wiry steel" Carry on with the highlights then Ma, I love your bouncy hair. My hair is turning slowly, (my little Brother is very grey at 27!!) I wish for a money streak really, so I could look like an Italian woman and dress accordingly but again, Dior says we should dress to match our personality...hum, well I plan to leave my hair natural and go grey with dignity...if it looks terrible though I will be ignoring Dior and running to the salon. Dior also says in H for holidays "I would like to say now that I think British women know perfectly how to dress for sport an holidays. For these occasions all the world has to learn from them". FANTASTIC! but I fear no longer true...

Auction, Frock Me...and The London Vintage Bridal Fair!

On Sunday, October the 3rd I am doing my stand at The London Vintage Bridal Fair, its being held at the Hilton Olympia, 380 Kensington High Stree, W14 form 10:30am - 5pm and will have lots of amazing stands selling everything bridal as well as fantastic dresses and accessories for guests, bridesmaids and mums....worth coming even if you are not getting married or going to a wedding just to buy an incredible occasion dress! The images below are from The Vintage Wedding Dress company: http://www.thevintageweddingdresscompany.com/ .

1930s VINTAGE WEDDING DRESS

I forgot to mention in my last update about the vintage fashion valuation day - Friday 17th September at Dreweatts and Bloomsbury...it was great! some incredible Victorian bodices came in, and an amazing grecian dress from 1970s, Yuki2 label...as well as lots of other lovely bits including 1950s swimwear and little faux fur capes..I will let you know as soon as the catalogue is ready to view online - the sale is going to be held on Tuesday 18th January 2011, please email me if you would like to be on the mailing list for sales.
1920s VINTAGE WEDDING DRESS

Then on Sunday 19th I drove like the wind (legal wind speed of course) to Frock Me and had a great day - I managed to by myself an olive green ruched crepe dress with faux fur trim, its amazing! must get it cleaned and fixed by the weekend as its my friend Malcolm's (baby Malc) 50th (!!!omg) birthday...he works for Glastonbury festival doing the Dance stage so Mr Eavis has given him a field to have his own party in...it is a weekender but I think I will just go for the Saturday Disco night...the last party Malc held there was for his partner Sally (she is way younger than him ha ha), he was late applying for a music license so it was a silent disco, everyone had to wear wireless headphones and if you took them off all you could here was feet stomping on the wooden dance floor..very weird and funny, my friend Jo kept shouting rude things (as you do when wearing headphones) that I can't repeat here. ...Rob has chipped off to Milan in Andy's very fast car - they left last night at 3 am from Folkstone..they must be mad but Andy is afraid of flying so hey ho...am a bit jealous that I could not go to Milan but to be in a small space with those two for all those hours would have been unbearable, especially as Andy chain smokes and they both talk too much.... I bet Rob will be nicotine stained when he gets back. xx Samaya
